My history in beauty
Since my aim is to turn my blog into a beauty blog, i figured, i should say this now rather than later.
You can read about my makeup story here.
Obviously i have a certain love for makeup, thus when it came time to think about what i want to do with my life (after graduation), what i want to be, where to start my career, i naturally chose the beauty industry.
My first job after I graduated, I became a Marketing Executive for Bobbi Brown and La Mer. To also mentioned, Bobbi Brown and La Mer is under the parent company, Estee Lauder Companies. I joined early 2013 and left August 2014. Now, i am not attached to any Beauty brands.
Having worked for Bobbi Brown before, i have accumulated a fair number makeup from them, and some from other sister brands. I have learn Bobbi Brown’s style when it comes to makeup, and its habits. This is the same as skincare tips and habits i learned from working with La Mer.
Thus most of my tips and how i apply my makeup rings with a little bit of Bobbi Brown and La Mer’s philosophy. While i would say i am bias to the brands due to sentimental values, it does not affect my judgements. I use the products because it is good (and because i have them). Every brand has products that are good and bad.
Basically, what i am trying to say is that, yes i have worked (past tense) with Bobbi Brown and La Mer previously. So yes, i have alot of products from those brands and a fair few from sister brands. But no, it will not affect my judgement and what i write about. And no, i am not being paid.
So, with that, i shall end my little disclaimer.
Thank you.
My 5 basic makeup
In efforts of turning this blog into a beauty blog, i shall first start with the basics.
One thing i learn about makeup, is getting the basics down first is always a good starting point, the best step actually.
Now to add a little DISCLAIMER: the recommendations made in this post are my personal opinions (from trial and error, and things I picked up along the way). Feel free to disagree, agree, like, dislike, learn, ignore. These are just my thoughts on what is the basic 5 makeup and its tools are for beginners to start with.
As mentioned above, this are my recommendations on the first 5 basic makeup & tools to start of your makeup collection with:
- Having a good base: Foundation / Concealer
As with art, starting with a fresh clean canvas is always the best. This is the same when it comes to makeup. Good skin is always a plus when it comes to makeup – less to conceal, makeup glides on smoothly. Care for your skin, and you might just be able to skip this step: making sure your skin looks flawless.
Find your perfect foundation (liquid, powder, cream, stick, tinted moisturizer, BB cream, CC cream), then find your favourite tool to apply it (hands, brush, sponge). Some may only need dabs of concealer, some (like me) need the whole she-bang (CC Cream + Foundation + Concealer for spots and under the eye), and of course some have naturally flawless skin which needs nothing but maintenance (grr..jealous!).
My choice: Origins CC Cream + Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick with Bobbi Brown full coverage brush.
NOTE: do not forget your SPF/sunblock/sunscreen, and conceal that dark circle. - Define that eye: Eyeliner
I actually started my collection with one dark brown eyeliner. I still remember, it was from The Body Shop. You will be surprised by how much eyeliner can do for you – to change your look in an instant. In fact, i practically started my makeup collection with eyeliners.
My choice: L’oreal Super Liner Intense, Black Laquer (liquid liner); Bobbi Brown Perfectly Defined Eyeliner, Chocolate Truffle (pencil, cream) - Don’t forget your lashes: Mascara (+ eyelash curler)
With eyeliner, you do not want to forget your lashes. Especially with a thick liner on, you lashes would be drown by it. So coat that mascara on. Mascara really helps to open the eyes (even without eyeliner).
My choice: Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara, Black; Maybelline The Falsies Volume Express Mascara, black - A healthy glow: Cheeks & Lips!
My favourite product ever in the cheek and lip category is a red cheek & lip stain! i love it. It helps create that natural glow to your cheeks and a natural rosy lip colour. Easy to use, and the outcome: natural but fresh, glow-y and healthy looking skin.
My choice: The Body Show Cheek & Lip Stain, red; Benefit, Benetint - A pop of colour: A Bright / Bold lip.
All that i have mentioned about above are very basic makeup (which you might/might not already know), but one trick to make it look like you spent hours on your makeup is by throwing on a bold/bright lip. Find your favourite bold/bright lip that works for you, that you are comfortable to wear. A bold lip can help you take a basic day look, to a night look; from a simple look, to looking like you spent hours. And it is the easiest makeup to wear, and change up.
My choice: Bobbi Brown Lip Colour, Burnt Red; Bobbi Brown Lip Colour, Cosmic Lily; Estee Lauder Signature lipstick, Spanish Red
I recommend starting with these first as they are no fuss, basic products that you need to create one look. It is good to start simple and learn the basic, that way you wont be overwhelmed by the many different and other products out there.
I started my collection with these 5 types of products, in fact i can still remember them that i can name them out (in this order but this happen over the span of a few years):
- The Body Shop Eyeliner in Dark Brown – from here my collection grew to other coloured eyeliners. Eyeliners was/IS my thing and my most important makeup. I have TONS.
- The Body Shop Tea Tree Concealer – this was when my pimples started to pop out, and well i wanted to conceal and treat it. This then went on to me buying concealers from the drug stores, before my mum stepped in and introduced me to foundation. My first foundation was Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Even Finish Compact Foundation in Natural (2008).
- The Body Shop Cheek & Lip Stain (the red one) – my love for cheek and lip stain grew from here. Actually i still use the cheek & lip stain, if i recall right, i have used up about 4 tubes now.
- L’oreal Double Extension Mascara, black – mascara naturally came into the picture after my obsession with eyeliner grew. I left that my lashes looks so dull in comparison, and that is how i picked up the mascara.
- NYX Round Lipstick (i don’t recall the colour) – being a teenager at that time, i was more inclined to lipgloss. But it did nothing for me but add gloss or sparkles or both. And it made my lips sticky. I quickly grew out of it. When i slowly experimented with lipstick, i found my love for them. My first lipstick was not a bold colour, but a nude (one of those my-lips-but-better colour). Not too long after that, i found what a bold lip can do, it was just the matter of having the guts. And now, i love it! And constantly recommend people to find their bold lip.
Haha..i just realized my first 3 are from The Body Shop after this post. I guess, it was because in my teenage year, Body Shop was big (and it just opened), and it is affordable.
Do let me know what are your top 5 makeup that are your must-have!

in progress
As i have promised in previous post that i will try to be consistent with my posts, here is a quick update. I am currently working on a post, that would be for beauty & makeup junkies alike. Which would take some time on my end, as i wish to adorn it with pictures and all that jazz, and well, to actually type it all out. So do bear with me. I swear i am not being lazy.
To leave you with something, i took a look back to my old post (way back in Nov 2011), and came across my post about my Bad Beauty Habits and my need to break them. So here is a quick progress: (progress in BOLD PURPLE) and i guess i would grade my progress 1 (being bad – no change) to 5 (mission accomplished)
Bad Beauty Habits
- Pinching/picking/touching my pimples, black heads, white heads... less, but no, i did not kick this habit [2]
- generally just touching my face! again, less, but still [2]
- frowning ALOT! i think all my answers might turn out the same, less, but i still do have this habit. [2]
- not being consistent with my daily skincare routine well, currently i am still working out a routine that is right for me, so i can’t answer this yet. [2]
- sleeping with makeup on (tho im MUCH improve on this, its still happening) OH. apart from too-drunk-to-remember nights, i am good with this! so i would say, mission accomplished for this. [4.5]
- need to wash my makeup brushes more often i would say i score fair for this, could be better, but i pass! [3.5]
things i tell myself i SHOULD do, but i don’t:
- drink MORE water! i would say i score above average for this. [3.5]
- eat more fruits and veg mehhh… [1]
- moisturize more! again, fair. [3]
And to wish you good night, here is a random picture i took in Bangkok, Rod Fai

TAG: My Lazy Day
- Hair Products

Hair will just be in a pony tail or bun...super messy by the end of the day. So i guess, the "product" will be some form of hair tie. (i use a cheapo one from the pasar malam) - Makeup Products

What makeup? i do not bother with makeup on a lazy day, but if i must be presentable, some form of concealer / foundation / BB Cream / Tinted Moisturizer and i will TRY to rock the "messy hair look".. - Outfits

Shorts and a old baggy t-shirt/spagg top all the wayy..again, if i have to be presentable; jean shorts and a (dressy/presentable) t-shirt or spagg top. - Tea or Coffee

My first choice will always be coffee, but if it is one of those cooling stay in bed days..i would opt for tea. - Snacks

Anything available. - Pampering item

A hot shower followed by a face mask.

40 MAKEUP QUESTIONS TAG [Part 2]
Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick in Natural
for blemishes, I used my Foundation or Bobbi Brown Touch-up Stick in Natural; for under eye, Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener in Bisque mixed with Peach.
I think it is yellow (towards the warmer side) but I have a lot of red spots.
a fluffy tapered Blending Brush and Eyelash curler, always.

Yes, I'm still alive
40 MAKEUP QUESTIONS TAG
SKINCARE- How many times do you wash your face daily?
Twice, morning and night. Sometimes, if my skin is feeling extra dry, i will skip washing my face in the morning (just splash some water). - What skin type do you have? (dry, oily, combo)
This is abit of a hard question for me to answer. Here is a backstory:
Originally, i have combo to very oily skin (and being in adolescence, i thought i had to keep washing my face - thus striping it of its natural moisture);
As i hit about 18, my skin started to stabilized a little, but since i was consistently trying to get rid of the oils on my face, my skin as become SUPERBLY dehydrated (still oily and pimple prone) - but my skin flakes and peel, but remains oily and shiny;
About a year ago, i had a major breakout! Not even exaggerating! It was horrible! I did not know the cause (did not change anything in my daily) and nothing seemed to work. So i went to a skin specialist. i was on daily medication for bout 6 months, now on alternate days. This medicine (Roaccutane 10mg) is pretty known in the pimple world. It has cleared up my skin ALOT, but it has also made it VERY dry. So right now, my skin is dry. - What is your current facial wash?
I switch between Origin's Checks and Balance, and La Mer Cleansing Lotion - Do you exfoliate?
I used too, but now with my dry skin, i do not. And if i do - i use a really mild one (meant for daily). - What brand do you use?
To exfoliate or in general? if to exfoliate, it will be NuSkin (their gentle scrub), or if i want a more invasive scrub, i will mix my Bobbi Brown Buffing Grains with my cleanser. - What moisturizer do you use?
Again, i switch out between Bobbi Brown Hydrating Face Cream and La Mer Moisturizing Lotion - Do you have freckles?
No. - Do you use eye cream?
Honestly, i know this is important, i tend to always forget this step! i need to work on that. - Do you or did you have acne prone skin?
Yes. Especially when i first hit puberty. - Did you ever have to use Pro-activ?
Nopes.

- Naked Lunch Eyeshadow is another colour that wears beautifully on its own and paired with others.
- Vanilla Pigment is a colour that looks boring in the little container, but GOSH! so so pretty! it has that shimmer sheen of gold when applied, and instantly brightens up your lid. prefect inner colour colour and to line your under eyes (to create that ever popular K-pop look). but also awesome for all over the lids just to add some colour-and-go.

Tag: Get Your Freak On
i dont really have a nick name. they just call me by my name: Chui Yi!
mmm..i wonder if i can call this a habit! but i love to fold my legs. its like my ultimate comfortable sitting position. to cross my legs or to hug them. it doesnt matter where i am or what im sitting on.
oh in the movies, once i sit down i automatically take off my shoes and bring my legs up and hug them, like i curl into a ball on the seat.
#3. Do you have any weird phobias?
yes. drains. everytime i cross one, i fear falling in. and the thing is im naturally clumsy. so that doesnt help. i will always hold on to something or someone when i cross a drain.
also, standing or walking on drains that are covered. u know those bars.
| something like this |
#4. What's a song you secretly LOVE to blast & belt out when you're alone?
nopes, not really. i listen to any kind of music. but i really do enjoy my Disney songs :)
#5. What's one of your biggest pet peeves?
when a person make me repeat something one too many times! as in like if u keep asking the same questions over and over and over again and ive already answered u over and over again, and u still keep asking.
and i know i cannot be nice when i want to be left alone and the person knows this but still disturbs me.
can these be called pet peeves?
owh ive recently found out that i really cant stand the sound of someone chewing gum. especially when they are next to me. and its just chewing gum.
#6. What's one of your nervous habits?
i just cant stop moving. if im nervous i have to move. and sometimes i hop/jump on the spot. and id squeeze my hands together.
#7. What side of the bed do you sleep on?
i sleep alone on a queen sized bed. usually the left side. or right in the middle.
#8. What was your first stuffed animal & it's name?
i dont really remember what my first stuff animal was. but my oldest memory of a stuff animal are 2 little white rabbits. a bigger one and a slightly smaller one. the bigger one is represented by my older sister and the smaller one by me. dont think we gave them names tho.
#9. What's the drink you ALWAYS order at starbucks?
not a huge Starbucks person. but when i do go to Starbucks, i either order the Caramel Macchiato or the Green Tea Latte.
#10. What's the beauty rule you preach.. but never ACTUALLY practice?
mmmm...i dont really preach anything. but i do know and somtimes tell people to drink more water and to be consistent with their skincare routine..but yea..
#11. Which way do you face in the shower?
#12. Do you have any 'weird' body 'skills'?
no? i dont know. i can trip on absolutely nothing when walking, or just loose my balance sometimes? and i was told by family members that i have the weirdest sleeping positions..is that counted?
#13. What's your favorite 'comfort food'/food thats 'bad' but you love to eat it anyways?
i dont really have a set or particular 'comfort food'. i have weird cravings most of the time. so really, i just eat what i crave. but ultimately, its ice cream. as cliche as that may be.
#14. What's a phrase or exclamation you always say?
OMG!,
SERIOUSLY?!!?!?!?,
WHATT??,
DIM KAIII?? (which mean 'why' in Cantonese)
#15. Time to sleep- what are you ACTUALLY wearing?
depending on the weather or room condition: super big loose t-shirt and if its hot cotton shorts or boys boxers (yups!), and if its cold or chilly long sweatpants or cotton pants.
